IS 606: Introduction to Information Systems II (2 credits)

This course introduces students to the basic technologies and concepts for the field of Information Systems. The major concepts covered are: Data Communications, Systems Administration, and databases. Web technology is used as a framework for teaching these concepts. At the end of this course, students will have mastered the concepts at an introductory level and have the practical skills to design, develop, and maintain a web site on both the client and server side.

Course Description

IS 605 and IS 606 will give you a hands-on introduction to the major basic technologies used in the field of Information Systems. These technologies are:

  • Networking and Data Communications
  • Programming
  • Databases

The introduction is hands-on because these topics are developed within a framework of teaching you how to be a webmaster. You will learn all entry-level skills required to develop and deploy simple web sites. You will learn:

  • How the Internet works at a technical level (Networking and Data Communications)
  • HTML- Hypertext Markup Language (Programming)
  • JavaScript (Programming)
  • Web Server Administration (Networking and Data Communications- specifically Systems Administration)
  • Server-side processing (Programming)
  • Database/Web Connectivity (Databases)

The course is a hands-on course and will require you to develop web pages and sites. IS 605 is a seven week course that uses only client-side technology that requires a web browser. You will also have to FTP files up to servers at UMBC. All details of this process are included in the course materials. IS 606 is a seven week course that will require that you set up a web server and database on your own PC. All software and instructions for IS 606 are included on the CDROM that your received with your course materials. There are a number of streaming movies available on-line to demonstrate or explain topics for both courses. They require that you install the free Real Player.
